The challenge
UEFA EURO 2024 in Cologne posed a significant security challenge: how to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of visitors across multiple public areas. Ranging from fan zones and stadiums to key traffic intersections. In a dense city environment.
The city required a surveillance solution that was not only highly reliable and scalable, but also rapidly deployable. Traditional fixed camera setups were too slow and inflexible, and public infrastructure (such as cabling and network access) was inconsistent or overloaded during the event.
The combination of fixed units, mobile towers, and live monitoring created a safe environment throughout EURO 2024. Nexonik demonstrated how flexibility and high-tech solutions work hand in hand

The Results
The Nexonik TelescopicMast deployment exceeded expectations during UEFA EURO 2024 in Cologne. All surveillance units operated without downtime throughout the entire event period, even during network congestion and high crowd density.
Thanks to seamless integration with the city’s HCOC, law enforcement and security teams were able to respond in real time to crowd surges, potential conflicts, and traffic flow issues. The under 10-minute deployment time allowed repositioning on the fly. An essential feature given the dynamic nature of fan movements across the city.
Moreover, the system’s presence boosted public confidence, with visible, high-tech surveillance serving as both a deterrent and a reassurance.

The solution used
The City of Cologne selected Nexonik after reviewing several temporary surveillance options. Nexonik’s TelescopicMast solution stood out due to its unique combination of mobility, fast deployment, and network flexibility. Other vendors required long setup times or fixed infrastructure, which did not meet the demands of a fast-moving, high-density event.
Once selected, Nexonik worked closely with local authorities to identify key risk zones, including fan areas, high-traffic intersections, and bridges. The team deployed 15 surveillance towers, including compact trailer-based units, each equipped with AI-enhanced PTZ cameras, connected through LTE, fibre, or point-to-point wireless links.
Setup per unit took less than 10 minutes, enabling quick scaling and repositioning as crowd patterns shifted. Operators at the HCOC were given direct access to all video feeds, creating a live, centralised overview of the event.
